Last night after Randy and I had cooked dinner, we decided, well I decided that I wanted to carve pumpkins. So Randy happily obliged and off to the grocery we went, for the second time that night. I was like a kid in a candy store. “No…I want that one. Wait that one! This one’s fatter, more space to draw. Wait dig a little lower, I think I see a better one!” After what seemed like 10 minutes, we had found two beautifully plump pumpkins. They were just right.
So home we went with our bright orange canvas’ and we got to carving. I got sharpee’s, knives, spoons and made myself a glass of wine while Randy put out newspaper and cracked open a beer. In all this time, carving pumpkins was something the two of us had never done together. It’ll be 8 years in November and we were excited to do something new, it was refreshing.
I’m still laughing at Randy with the rubber kitchen gloves on while he was removing the inside of the pumpkin. If any of you know him, you how how weird he is about certain foods, their smells and the “texture” of some foods. He is Mr. Meat and Potatoes, so this was a shock to see him gutting a pumpkin. I stood there as he leaned over the garbage can with his “little yellow gloves” on and I couldn’t help but smile. He looked up at me and is like “WHAT?! I have to do this before we have kids, it’s been forever and I don’t want to look like I don’t know what I’m DOING!!” So I just watched with a grin on my face and tried not to think about how bad the smell was!
There is something about photographing the “process” of “doing” projects/activities that fulfils me. It’s weird. It’s like a sense of accomplishment, you know like the Beef Bourguignon recipe that I photographed step by step a month ago. This was just another one of those things. Photos capture the memories for me, they take time that’s irreplaceable and turn it something I feel like I can relive, even if it’s just for a moment.
My cutout was more complicated than Randy’s, so as you can tell I needed a little help towards the end. My hand was getting tired and I was also making Randy nervous by the way I was cutting! You know just like I hammer in nails and the way I paint walls. Eh– the way I was holding the knife while carving my pumpkin was about the same!
I am so excited about this post, it has surely gotten me in the Halloween spirit. Now we just need to go hunting around for our costumes!
Leave it to Randy to carve the head of a Bass Guitar and me to carve a Camera! HAPPY HALLOWEEN Everybody!!
