I seem to have lost my craftiness – you know somewhere in between having a photography business, planning a wedding and renovating a house. I must have lost it somewhere in the shuffle? I stumbled upon a design blog the other day with lots of cool ideas for wall art and furniture restoration. I oohhhed and ahhhed as I skimmed through the entries. I then found myself searching through craigslist and local websites to try and find an old junky china cabinet or table to restore. I really need to drive around to some old flee markets around here and maybe head towards Ponchatoula where I’ve heard they have some great places too. It would be wonderful to assign one day a week where I could just dive into a craft project, I miss that about my college days. My life was art – I lived and breathed it. Day after day you would either find me in the photography darkroom, the painting building, outside with my drawing class, firing ceramics in the kiln or in an Art History lecture. Oh the good ole’ days – I’m craving some type of art project.
My last year of college I was finishing up my Art and Design degree at LSU in Baton Rouge and Randy had moved home to finish up his Marketing Degree at UNO. My schedule became pretty predictable: Sunday night- Thursday afternoon I was in BR and then I drove home to NOLA for the weekend. Those Thursday nights here in New Orleans were Randy and I’s painting nights. We would get a 6 pack of Abita beer, turn the radio on, set up our brushes and paint and sit in the garage with our blank canvas. Whatever came to our minds is what we created. Randy’s always turned into these edgy works of art with bright fluorescent colors, splatter marks, music notes and mini skull and cross bones. Mine always consisded of rich deep colors with bronze and golds- typically Fleur De Lis’. So random, but pretty funny now that I think about it. This was before Corks and Canvas was even cool much less even around!
Talking about my college life reminds me of friend Tyler, she is one of my best friends and I love her very much. She was my roommate in Baton Rouge the entire 4 years while I was there, and needless to say, we shared lots of fun times together. Last week Tyler’s stepfather Mr. Chuck passed away. He was only 61. My most vivid memory of Mr. Chuck is from the 2 weeks that both my family and Tyler’s family spent in Baton Rouge after Hurricane Katrina. At one point we had 20+ people in our 3 bedroom Condo. Not only did we have that many people staying with us, but we also had all the dogs. I want to say 8 dogs at one point. Mr. Chuck loved taking the dogs for a walk! Lots of Italian dinners and stories shared while our families were staying with us. Anyway, I just want Ty to know that I am thinking about her and her mom Ms. Debbie. Here is a photo of Tyler, Mr. Chuck and Ms. Debbie from the Balot/Welsh Wedding I photographed last year. (Tyler’s cousins Wedding) Love you Roomie!
